Casting is the process of pouring liquid metal into a mold, where it cools and solidifies. The casting process can produce everything from art pieces to engine parts. The shape is determined by the mold cavity, but something needs to shape the mold—that's where the pattern comes in. Patterns are a model for the object to be cast.

May 08, 2012 · Each half of the pattern is put into a flask (metal frame) or wood box frame for sand containment. In the next step, a sand/silica mixture (varies on type of casting method) is poured and packed onto the pattern in the flask to create the mold. The sand will then harden and it is time to remove the pattern from the sandfilled flask.

May 22, 2017 · Sand casting is the most common amateur metal casting technique, with lots of YouTube examples. Yet all the decent examples have a draft incorporated. Since you destroy the sand mould when extracting the casting, I can't see any benefit from a draft. It just adds an unnecessary level of complexity when designing and making the pattern.

Resin Shell Sand Molding Resinbonded silica sand is placed onto a heated pattern, forming shelllike mold halves. Pattern halves are bonded together with or without cores. Probably the earliest, most automated and most rapid of mold (and core making) processes was the heatcuring technique known as the shell process.
